Emmitt Klein-Stropnicky
Metalwork
Emmitt was born and raised in the coastal town of Scituate, MA. He has been doing metal work since he was a teenager and fell in love with the magic of welding— he has 20 years of metalworking under his belt. Having graduated from Pratt Institute in 2008, he received a BFA in sculpture and developed most of his career while living in Brooklyn. The past 10 years Emmitt was a lead fabricator for high-end light fixture and furniture companies, working in all kinds of metals, but specifically in steel, brass, and bronze.
The idea of Cerulean Studio was born in a former metal shop while exploring different patinas– a chemical process that creates various kinds of oxidation on metals. Beautiful hues of blue and green emerged on the brass surface mimicking that of the ocean. His work tends to lean towards functional minimalism— products with purpose, and simple lines with a refined design.
Each product design is often influenced by the shapes of “leftover” scraps of metal from previous projects. Every product is cut and shaped by hand and then assembled by welding, soldering, or mechanically joined with hardware. What truly brings the work to life is applying the different kinds of patina, which creates a one-of-a-kind finish on each product.
After living away from home for 18 years, Emmitt came back to Scituate in late 2022 where he resides once again in the sea foam green house that he grew up in, working out of his matching workshop on the property.
